Protect Your Irrigation System from This Weekend's Hard Freeze

What every DFW homeowner needs to know

🚨 HARD FREEZE WARNING — This Weekend

DFW is expecting dangerous cold with lows in the single digits to mid-teens this weekend. Your irrigation system needs attention NOW.

Do I Need to Winterize My Sprinkler System?

Here in DFW, we don't typically need to blow out our irrigation systems like they do up north — our freezes are usually short-lived. However, we absolutely need to take precautions, especially for above-ground components that are exposed to the cold.

The Danger You Might Not Think About

If your system accidentally runs during a freeze — whether from a programming error or a stuck valve — it can spray water onto your driveway, sidewalk, and even the street. That water freezes almost instantly, creating extremely hazardous ice conditions for you, your family, and anyone passing by.

What You Need to Do

1.
Turn off the water to your sprinkler system at the shut-off valve (usually near your water meter or where the irrigation line enters your home).
2.
Identify your backflow preventer. If you have an above-ground Reduced Pressure Assembly (RPZ), Pressure Vacuum Breaker (PVB), or anti-siphon valves, they need protection.
3.
Drain it — Best option. Open the test cocks or drain valves to release trapped water.
4.
Or cover and insulate well — If you can't drain it, wrap it thoroughly with insulation and cover with plastic to keep moisture out.
5.
Set your controller to OFF or RAIN MODE to prevent any accidental runs.
