The Upgrade Case

Old Timer vs. Smart Controller

This isn't a cosmetic upgrade. A properly configured smart controller eliminates problems that manual timers fundamentally can't solve.

Weather awareness
Before

Runs on fixed schedule regardless of rain or forecast

After

Skips automatically when rain is forecast or soil is already wet

Remote control
Before

Requires physical access to the controller box

After

Full control from your phone — start, stop, adjust from anywhere

Seasonal adjustment
Before

Same runtime year-round unless manually changed

After

Automatically scales runtimes based on local ET and temperature

Clay soil handling
Before

Runs zones for full duration — water runs off before soaking in

After

Cycle-and-soak splits runtime to match clay absorption rate

Freeze protection
Before

Runs unless you manually suspend it before a freeze

After

Freeze skip triggers automatically when temps approach 32°F

Water usage data
Before

No visibility — find out on your water bill

After

Real-time flow monitoring and usage history in the app

Plano-Specific Setup

Clay soil changes how every zone needs to be configured

Plano sits on the same Blackland Prairie clay that runs across North Texas. Clay absorbs water at 0.2–0.4 in/hr. Standard spray heads deliver 1.5+ in/hr. Install a Rachio without configuring the right soil type and you're just running the same bad schedule on a smarter box.

Soil type set to Blackland clay
Tells Rachio's weather engine to apply soil-appropriate ET adjustments and scheduling
Cycle-and-soak per zone
Short run cycles with rest periods — stops runoff, gets more water to roots
Rain delay tuned for DFW rain events
Default rain thresholds aren't set for Texas weather. We adjust these at install.
Spray vs. rotor zones separated
Spray and rotor heads have very different precipitation rates. Mixing them on the same schedule wastes water and creates dry spots.

How the Installation Works

Six steps from initial assessment to a working smart controller with the app on your phone.

01

System Assessment

We evaluate your existing controller, zone count, wiring, and water source. We also note your soil type, head types by zone, and any site-specific factors that affect programming.

02

Controller Recommendation

For most Plano residential properties, Rachio 3 is the right fit. We confirm zone count compatibility (8 or 16 zone), WiFi requirements, and mounting location before quoting.

03

Installation

Old controller removed. New Rachio mounted, wired to existing zone terminals, and connected to your home WiFi. TCEQ-licensed work — not a big box store handoff.

04

Zone Configuration

Each zone gets configured with the correct head type (spray vs. rotor), soil type, slope, sun exposure, and plant type. This is what makes weather intelligence actually work.

05

Cycle-and-Soak Setup

Plano's clay soil requires multiple short run cycles with rest periods instead of one long run. We configure this correctly per zone so water soaks in instead of running off.

06

App Walkthrough

We set up the Rachio app on your phone, walk through how to run zones manually, read the schedule, and make adjustments. You leave knowing how to use what you just paid for.

Drop-In Replacement

Works with your existing system — all brands

Rachio replaces only the controller. Your valves, pipes, heads, and wiring stay exactly as-is. We connect your existing zone terminals to the new controller — no excavation, no rewiring, no valve replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does cycle-and-soak matter specifically in Plano?
Plano sits on Blackland Prairie clay — the same heavy clay soil that runs across most of North Texas. Clay absorbs water at roughly 0.2 to 0.4 inches per hour. Standard spray heads deliver 1.5 inches per hour or more. If you run a spray zone for 20 straight minutes, most of that water sheets across the surface and drains away before the soil can absorb it. Cycle-and-soak splits the runtime into 5-minute cycles with 60–90 minute rest periods between them, matching the delivery rate to what the clay can actually take in. Rachio handles this automatically once zones are configured with the correct soil type. Most timers require manual programming of every zone separately.
Do existing Rain Bird, Hunter, or Orbit systems work with Rachio?
Yes. Rachio replaces only the controller box — the wiring, valves, and heads stay exactly as they are. Your existing zones will work identically; they'll just be controlled by a smarter brain. The wiring terminals are standard across all major brands, so the swap is straightforward. After installation, zones are re-labeled in the app with their correct attributes so the weather intelligence actually has the data it needs to make smart decisions.
Can you install Rachio if my controller is in the garage or an inside closet?
Yes, though the WiFi range matters. Rachio uses dual-band WiFi (2.4GHz and 5GHz) and typically reaches a router 50–100 feet away through walls without a signal extender. If your controller is in a far corner of the garage or a basement utility room, we'll test signal strength during assessment. If there's a range issue, a simple WiFi extender near the controller solves it.
Is a Certified Rachio Pro installer different from buying one at Home Depot and installing it yourself?
Significantly. The hardware is the same, but proper zone configuration is what separates a smart controller that actually saves water from one that just looks different on the wall. Each zone needs accurate data: head type, nozzle type, precipitation rate, soil type, slope, sun exposure, and plant type. Get any of those wrong and the weather intelligence makes decisions based on bad inputs. We also configure cycle-and-soak correctly per zone, set the Plano-specific watering schedule windows, and make sure your system is compliant with NTMWD twice-weekly restrictions before we leave.
How long does the installation take?
Most residential Rachio installations in Plano take 1.5–2.5 hours from start to app walkthrough. Larger systems (16+ zones, multiple controllers, or systems with wiring issues) take longer. We don't rush zone configuration — getting each zone's attributes right at install time is what the whole upgrade depends on.
