Programming Your Irrigation Controller

Your controller is the brain of your irrigation system. Set it wrong, and you'll overwater, underwater, violate local restrictions, or waste money. This guide covers programs, start times, and runtimes.

Understanding Programs

A program is a complete watering schedule: which zones run, what days, when they start. Most controllers have multiple programs (A, B, C).

Why multiple programs matter:

  • Program A:Front and back lawn zones, Mon/Wed/Sat
  • Program B:Drip zones for beds, Tue/Fri

Each program operates independently.

Setting Start Times

The start time is when the program begins, not when each zone runs.

If your start time is 5:00 AM with four 20-minute zones:

  • 1Zone 1: 5:00–5:20 AM
  • 2Zone 2: 5:20–5:40 AM
  • 3Zone 3: 5:40–6:00 AM
  • 4Zone 4: 6:00–6:20 AM

You only need one start time per program.

Best practice for DFW: Start early enough to finish before sunrise (4:00–6:00 AM).

Setting Runtimes (Zone Duration)

Runtime depends on:

  • Sprinkler type (rotors need 30-45 min; sprays need 10-20 min)
  • Soil type (clay absorbs slowly)
  • Sun exposure
  • Slope
Zone TypeRuntimeNotes
Rotors (turf)25–40 minSplit if runoff occurs
Spray heads12–20 minWatch for pooling
Drip (beds)30–60 minDeep, infrequent

Cycle and Soak

Water runoff from overwatering running down street showing inefficient irrigation
Water pooling on driveway from irrigation system without cycle and soak programming

Run a zone for 10 minutes, pause 30 minutes, then run another 10 minutes. Valuable for clay soil and slopes.

This technique prevents runoff and allows water to penetrate deeper into clay soil.

Seasonal Adjustment

Adjust your controller's seasonal percentage to account for changing weather:

Spring

70–80%

Summer peak

100–120%

Fall

60–70%

Winter

0–30%

When to Call a Pro

If your controller won't hold programming, displays errors, or controls zones erratically, it may need replacement.

Common signs you need professional help:

  • Controller resets programming after power outages
  • Display shows errors or won't turn on
  • Zones run at wrong times or won't turn off
  • You want to upgrade to a smart controller
