
Sprinkler Head Replacement in Allen, Texas

A broken sprinkler head is the kind of problem that gets worse while you wait. The geyser at the front-yard zone shooting water onto the driveway. The dry stripe across the back lawn where one nozzle quit. The head the mower clipped two weeks ago that is now an open stub in the ground. Maybe the dog dug one up and the rest of the lawn is going brown around it. Maybe you noticed a dry stripe across the backyard and you cannot figure out which head quit working.
All four are head problems. All four are routine for us. You should not have to learn the irrigation business to get this fixed.
Six ways a head tells you it needs to be replaced
We've put hands on every one of these in Allen this year. The patterns are familiar. Most are 30 to 60 minutes of work per head once we're on the property.
The mower clipped a head and the body cracked off
Mower wheel hit the cap, the body sheared at the threads, and now there is a stub in the ground where a sprinkler used to be. We pull what's left, repair the swing joint or threaded outlet if it got damaged in the process, and set a new head at the right grade and arc to match the original coverage.
A column of water shooting straight up at one head
If you are standing in the yard watching a fountain, the nozzle is gone, the riser snapped below the nozzle, or the entire body blew out. The longer it runs unattended the wetter the surrounding turf gets. Quick fix once we are on site, but you may also have a soggy patch from however long it ran.
A head that won't pop up (or pops up halfway)
The internal wiper seal has worn out and the head can no longer hold pressure under the cap. Spray reaches the wrong distance and the head sometimes does not retract cleanly. On residential Hunter and Rain Bird heads this is body-level wear. We replace the whole head, not the internals.

Allen's Blackland Prairie clay shifts seasonally. A head that was flush at install is now buried in mulch or sunken into the turf, watering the soil around itself instead of the lawn. We pull it, re-set on a swing joint at correct grade, and reset the arc so the zone gets back its full coverage.
Rotors watering the street, the driveway, or the neighbor
Twin Creeks and Allen Ridge rotors that were aimed correctly in 2010 are now watering the curb. Some of this is clay movement around the riser, some is the internal arc-stop slipping over thousands of cycles. We re-aim, reset the stops, and replace the rotor if the gear has finally given up.
A dry stripe across the lawn from a clogged or scaled nozzle
Hard water in parts of Allen deposits scale on nozzle orifices. Output drops, the pattern gets lopsided, and one corner of the zone turns brown while everywhere else looks fine. We clean what cleans up and replace what does not. On MP Rotator and 1800-MPR nozzles, replacement is the practical move because the pattern matters.
What it actually looks like
A head that works just disappears into the lawn
You shouldn't be able to see your sprinkler heads when they are not running. They sit flush with the turf, pop up cleanly during a watering cycle, throw an even arc to the right radius, and then drop back down without spraying mulch or pavement on the way.
That's what we're aiming for. The right head body, set at the right grade, on a swing joint that lets it move with the soil, throwing a pattern that matches the rest of the zone. When all of that is right the zone disappears from your list of things to worry about.

Allen clay absorbs water four times slower than your sprinklers put it down
The reason so many Allen lawns have both soggy patches and brown patches at the same time is not your controller schedule. It is the mismatch between how fast standard nozzles spray and how fast Blackland Prairie clay can take it in.

What most pre-2015 Allen systems put down. Far faster than the soil can absorb. Excess runs off the high spots onto sidewalks and into the curb.

Multi-stream rotating nozzles bring the rate down to roughly what Allen clay can actually take in. Water goes into the ground instead of into the street.
On a zone where every nozzle is matched-precip, a quarter-circle, half-circle, and full-circle head all deliver the same in/hr to the ground. Coverage stays even no matter how the zone is shaped.

Hunter MP Rotator
Water-efficient option for small-to-medium spray zones
Multi-stream rotating nozzle that fits on a standard spray body. Much lower precipitation rate than spray nozzles (around 0.4 in/hr) which matches Allen clay infiltration rate better than fixed sprays. Great option when retrofitting a spray zone that overwaters.
Rain Bird 1800-MPR
Fixed spray zones where output matching is critical
Matched-precipitation-rate spray nozzles for the Rain Bird 1800 series body. A quarter, half, and full-circle nozzle in the same series all deliver the same in/hr to the ground, so you can mix coverage patterns on one zone without uneven watering.
On older systems where the original heads are discontinued and no longer matched-precip with current production, we'll recommend replacing the whole zone instead of doing one-at-a-time swaps. We tell you which situation you are in before we order parts.

Allen systems break down differently depending on when they were installed. The neighborhood usually tells us what we're walking into before we lift the first head.
Twin Creeks & Allen Ridge
Heads installed in the original builder package are hitting the wear-out window. Wiper seals leaking, arcs drifting, internal gears on rotors slipping. Most fixes are clean swaps with matched current production.
Bethany Lakes & Pepperwood
25+ year original heads. Often discontinued models that no longer have matched current parts. We'll replace the whole zone with current matched-precip heads when it makes more sense than one-at-a-time swaps.
Prairie Creek & Ridgeview
Mixed-age systems where previous partial work brought in different brands. Hardest to keep precip-matched without full zone replacement, but worth doing for the coverage gain.
