Drip Line Repair: Nine Cuts in One Yard

New landscaping went in, the bed plants started stressing, and the crew sent to fix it moved grass-zone spray heads into the beds instead of finding the problem. How cut drip lines get found, spliced, and tested, from a job with at least nine of them.

The short answer

A cut drip line announces itself two ways: water surfacing where it should not, and a zone flow rate above what the system used to run. Find the cut by running the zone and following the seep, splice it with a barbed coupling, then run it again. Repeat until the flow comes back down and the operational indicators lift.

This one starts the way a lot of drip jobs start: nobody called about the drip. The customer had just bought the house and hired landscapers to redo the beds, and to be fair, the landscaping looks great. Then the summer heat arrived, plants in the new beds started showing stress, and by the time I was standing in the yard the visible complaint was water running across the walkway. What I found underneath was a drip system that had been cut at least nine times.

The Job: New Landscaping, Stressed Plants, Nine Cut Lines

Every bed in this yard is on drip, which is exactly how beds should be plumbed. When the plants started struggling, the landscaper recommended an irrigation crew, and this is where the job went sideways. Instead of asking why the drip was not doing its job, that crew pulled spray heads out of the grass zones and physically moved them into the flower beds.

Read that again, because it is worse than it sounds. The heads were still plumbed to the grass zones. So now, every time the grass waters, part of the flower beds gets sprayed too, on a turf schedule, with turf runtimes. The coverage is not designed, it is wherever the moved heads happen to reach. Some plants were getting drip plus overspray. Some were getting compromised drip only. And the grass zones lost head-to-head coverage wherever a head was taken. That patchy, uneven stress the customer was seeing in the beds is exactly what that arrangement produces.

Meanwhile the actual problem was still in the ground. Running the drip zone and following the water, I repaired at least nine breaks: lines cut clean through under new plants, lines nicked, and several broken tees, spread across a mix of 12mm and 17mm tubing.

The drip was never the wrong system for those beds. It was the right system, cut in nine places.

How Drip Lines Get Cut, and the Fix That Made It Worse

Drip tubing lives shallow. On this job it ran three to four inches under the soil, with another two to three inches of mulch on top, which is what makes it cheap to install and easy to hit with a planting shovel. A landscaping refresh means dozens of planting holes dug straight into beds with tubing in them, and the crew digs blind. There is no malice in it; they cannot see the lines any more than a tree crew can. What separates this job from routine damage is the repair attempt that followed. Moving grass-zone spray heads into the beds breaks the one design principle that makes an irrigation system worth having: hydrozoning, where plants with different water needs get watered separately. Turf and shrubs are not on the same schedule for a reason, and the same logic is why you never mix head types on one zone, which our rotors and sprays guide walks through. The band-aid did not fix the drip. It just spread the damage across two more zones.

How to Find a Cut Drip Line

There is no tool that maps drip tubing under mulch. The method is patient and it works:

Run the zone and walk the beds. A severed line moves real water. Look for water surfacing on hardscape, washed-out channels in the mulch, or spots where the mulch is dark and soaked while the bed around it is dry. On this job, the walkway was the first witness.

Dig at the seep. Pull the mulch back where the water surfaces and follow the wet soil down to the tubing. The damage is usually right there or a short trace away.

Fix it, then run the zone again. One repair often unmasks the next. With the biggest opening closed, the zone builds a little more pressure and pushes water out of the next break, which shows you where to dig next. Nine repairs on this job came one seep at a time.

Know the limit of your eyes. Following the water only finds the cuts that surface. With five to seven inches of soil and mulch over the tubing, plenty of escaping water spreads underground and never shows on top, which is how a yard can still be losing water after nine visible repairs.

Let the numbers referee. Eyes miss things; a flow reading does not. If the zone is still flowing well above what a drip zone should, water is still leaving somewhere you have not found. That is also the logic behind flow monitoring, which turns this comparison into an automatic alert.

How the Repair Works

Drip repairs are all barbed fittings: cut the damaged section out clean, push a barbed coupling or tee into each end, done. No glue, no torches, no waiting.

The catch on a job like this is tubing size. Drip comes in more than one diameter, and this yard had both 12mm and 17mm in the same beds. Fittings are size-specific, so measure what you have before the store run. My own truck stock is 17mm tubing plus 12-to-17 adapters: if a section of 12mm has to come out, two adapters and a short piece of 17mm splice it back together without carrying a second roll of pipe. Broken tees get cut out and replaced the same way.

Cut a small sample of your tubing or measure its diameter first. 12mm and 17mm look almost identical in the ground, and a 17mm coupling will never seal on 12mm line.

When the Zone Still Will Not Build Pressure

Here is the honest part of the story: after nine or ten repairs, this zone still flows 11 to 12 gallons per minute, and it still will not build enough pressure to lift a drip operational indicator, the little flag that pops up when a drip zone reaches operating pressure. There is a return visit on the schedule.

When a drip zone will not come up to pressure after repairs, it comes down to reading two signals:

Flow still high. Water is still escaping. That means at least one more open line you have not found, hiding under a plant or deep enough that the seep is not surfacing. Keep following the water.

Flow low but indicators still down. Now the water is being blocked, not lost. Every open cut swallows soil while the zone runs, and all of it lands in the zone filter, the pressure regulator, and the nearest emitters. Flush the lines from the open ends before closing up the last repair, then pull and clean the filter screen.

One recommendation from this job: put an operational indicator on every drip zone, and if a large zone feeds several separate bed sections, give each section its own. An indicator will not flag a nick, but it will tell you instantly when a line is cut clean through, which is exactly the failure landscapers cause.

Before Landscapers Touch a Bed With Drip In It

The prevention here is one number written on a piece of paper.

Before the landscaping crew starts, run each drip zone and record its flow rate. A flow meter reading, or even your water meter with everything else in the house off, is enough. When the crew is done, run the same zones and compare. The numbers should be about the same. A jump means an open line. A big drop means something got crushed, kinked, or clogged. Either way you know the week the damage happened, while the crew that caused it is still answerable for it, instead of finding out in July from dying shrubs.

If you would rather not do the measuring, have an irrigator do a before-and-after check, and make sure whoever touches the system is licensed. In Texas, irrigation work requires a licensed irrigator for good reason. I do not know whether the crew that moved the heads on this job was licensed. I know they were sent out because plants were stressed, and instead of finding the reason, they rearranged hardware in a way that made both the beds and the turf worse. Diagnosis first is the whole job. If a bed on drip is struggling, the question is why the drip is not delivering, and answering it starts with finding the problem, not re-plumbing around it.

Run the zone and follow the water.
