When You Need Valve Locating

These common situations are exactly why we invested in professional valve locating equipment.

Previous Owner Didn't Document

New to the home and have no idea where your irrigation valves are buried? We can map your entire system.

Valve Box Buried Over Time

Soil, mulch, and grass growth can completely hide valve boxes that were once visible.

Landscaping Changes

New flower beds, raised planters, or hardscape may have covered or moved valve box locations.

Zone Won't Turn On

Need to repair a valve but can't find it? We locate it first, then fix the problem.

System Map Needed

Planning landscape work and need to know where valves are to avoid damage during construction.

Multiple Failed Dig Attempts

Already dug several holes with no luck? Stop guessing and let us find them with professional equipment.

New Fence Knocked Out a Zone

Fence installations are the #1 cause of irrigation damage we see. If a zone stopped working after fence work, we can locate the cut wires and damaged lines.

Noticed Any of These Signs?

Professional locating saves hours of digging and protects your landscape.

Why Professional Valve Locating

Skip the guesswork. Our equipment finds valves in minutes instead of hours.

Save Hours of Digging

Professional equipment finds valves in minutes. No more randomly digging holes across your yard hoping to get lucky.

Pinpoint Accuracy

Our locating equipment identifies valve locations within inches, not feet. One small excavation instead of multiple failed attempts.

Cost-Effective

Valve locating costs far less than the labor of blind digging - and prevents damage to your lawn and landscape.

No Landscape Damage

Precise location means minimal excavation. We find the valve, not your sprinkler lines, tree roots, or underground cables.

What We're Looking For

Irrigation valves are typically installed in round or rectangular valve boxes buried 6-12 inches below ground. Over time, these boxes get covered by soil settlement, mulch buildup, grass overgrowth, and landscape changes - making them nearly impossible to find without specialized equipment.

  • Round or rectangular valve boxes
  • Typically 6-12 inches below surface
  • Often near driveways, patios, or home foundations
  • Multiple valves grouped together or spread throughout

Our Locating Methods

We use multiple professional techniques to find every valve in your system.

Wire Tracing

We connect a professional wire tracer to your controller wires and follow the signal underground directly to each valve. Sometimes the first valve we find isn't the one we need — in that case, we isolate sections of the system and narrow it down.

Electromagnetic Detection

Our professional-grade locator detects the solenoid's electromagnetic signature even through soil and mulch.

Systematic Zone Testing

We run each zone while listening for valve actuation sounds and checking for subtle ground vibration.

Site Mapping

After locating, we can mark valve positions with flags and provide you with a system map for future reference.

Wire Fault Detection

If wires are cut or damaged, our equipment pinpoints the break location so repairs can be made with minimal digging.

Multi-Valve Systems

Whether you have 3 valves or 15, we locate them all and document each position for your irrigation system records.

Flat-Rate Pricing + Find-It-or-Free Guarantee

We charge a flat rate — not hourly. Whether it takes five minutes or two hours, the price is the same. If we can't find the valve, you don't pay. And if it turns out the valve was visible from the surface, we won't charge you for something you could have found yourself.

How We Locate Your Valves

Our systematic approach finds every valve and documents the locations.

1

System Review

We inspect your controller, count zones, and review any existing documentation to understand your system layout.

2

Wire Connection

Our transmitter connects to your zone wires at the controller, sending a traceable signal through the underground wiring.

3

Locate & Mark

Using professional detection equipment, we trace each wire to its valve and mark the precise location.

4

Verify & Document

We activate each zone to confirm valve locations, then provide you with positions marked or mapped.

Valve Locating FAQs

Get answers to common questions about finding buried irrigation valves.

How much does valve locating cost?

We charge a flat rate for valve locating — not hourly. Most companies charge by the hour, which means a slow find costs you more. With our flat rate, you know the price upfront whether it takes five minutes or two hours. If we can't find the valve, we don't charge you. And if we hook up the locator and realize the valve was visible from the surface, we won't charge you for that either — we're not going to bill you for something you could have walked over and found yourself.

Why can't I find my valves myself?

Valves are typically buried 6-12 inches deep in valve boxes that get covered by soil, mulch, grass growth, and landscaping over time. Without specialized equipment, you're essentially guessing - and most homeowners dig multiple holes before giving up. Our equipment traces the actual wire path to each valve.

How do valves get "lost" in the first place?

Valve boxes settle below grade over years of soil movement. Landscapers cover them with mulch or soil. Previous owners may never have documented locations. New sod or landscape changes hide the boxes. Tree root growth can even shift valve box positions.

Can you locate valves if the wires are cut?

Yes, but it's more challenging. We use multiple techniques including electromagnetic detection of the solenoid itself, acoustic listening while zones run, and systematic probing. Cut wires can also be located and repaired as part of the service.

How long does valve locating take?

It can take five minutes or several hours — there's no way to know until we start. Sometimes we pick up the signal immediately and walk right to it. Other times the locator finds a different valve first, and we have to start isolating sections of the system to narrow down the one we need. That's why we charge a flat rate instead of hourly — you shouldn't have to worry about the clock while we work through it.

Do you mark the valve locations?

Yes! We mark each valve location with flags so you can find them easily. If requested, we can also create a simple map of your system showing valve positions relative to your home and landscape features.

My fence company just installed a new fence and now a zone won't come on. Can you help?

This is one of the most common calls we get. Fence post installations cut zone wires and sometimes hit lateral lines. We can trace the wiring from your controller to find exactly where the break is, repair the damaged wire or pipe, and get the zone running again. If you're planning fence work, consider having us do a line locate beforehand — it's a lot cheaper than repairing damage after the fact.
